BREAKOUT Activities
Although some of these activities are classified by level, I believe they can be used with many different levels with only slights modifications, if any. In fact, some of these activities could even be repeated throughout a learner's journey. Whichever level you decide to use these design activities with, it's the language development intentions that will change.
ISLAND HOPPING
Grade 6 and up
LET'S FIND THE TREASURE
Is there anything better than travelling to some of the most beautiful islands in the world while making sure our students are developing their ESL competencies? Unfortunately, I can only offer you this pretend cruise but I'm hoping you and your students will have fun doing this activity. In this breakout activity, students will have to collaborate and discuss to solve the different puzzles. They will also have to use their reading strategies to find key elements in the texts and demonstrate understanding.

WHERE IS BEN'S MOM?
Same engaging activity but without the expensive box. This activity is done in teams of four instead of being a whole group activity.. Inspired by the "Escape the Room", the concept has been used in schools all over the world to foster cooperative learning. It is an interesting context for our ESL learners to engage in authentic interaction situations while developing functional language and vocabulary. The Case of the Video Game Controller was inspired by a short film. Will your students be able to help Benjamin's mom escape?

A CLUE SPINOFF
Breakout EDU activities are definitely a new trend in education. Inspired by the "Escape the Room" puzzle and adventure games, the concept has been used in schools all over the world to foster cooperative learning. It is an interesting context for our ESL learners to engage in authentic interaction situations while developing functional language and vocabulary. The Case of the Haunted Castle was inspired by the Clue board game. You will see many resembles with the characters and rooms from the game. Will your students be able to help the characters escape from the haunted castle?

IT'S FINALLY PROM NIGHT
When the ministry's ESL exams are over with in June, it's sometimes challenging to keep the students motivated and engaged. This breakout activity is a fun activity to use in the last classes of the year. Students will try to figure out what happened to the DJ as he's gone missing from the prom. They will have to collaborate and interact orally to solve six different puzzles.

A TOUR GONE BAD
A school trip gone bad, missing students, and a ransom note make for a perfect way to foster oral interaction. In teams, students will be invited to solve different puzzles to save the students before the inthinkable happens. While working together to figure out the puzzles, students will explore and learn about the beautiful province of Nova Scotia and its Cabot Trail.
