EMERGENCY PLANNING
Elementary Cycle 1
Teaching ESL Remotely
What will I do with my students if a classroom closes and I have to teach online? This question is on everyone’s lips, along with “when will I find the time to do all this?”. Well hopefully this emergency planning will give you a hand. This planning springboarded from my service center’s 9 day schedule in which 1st cycle students receive 2 hours of English and other cycles get 3 hours (each period actually lasting 54 minutes). You will therefore find activities for a complete cycle in this planning. It includes everything you need, from the presentation documents to the students documents ready to share. We use Google for Education so you’ll find most documents in the Google format. However, I did create either a PowerPoint or PDF version of all documents for teachers using other teaching platforms.
I LOVE MY WHITE SHOES
Elementary Cycle 1
Meet Pete the Cat
Pete the Cat loves his new white shoes so much that he invented a song about them. However, as he’s walking down the street, Pete the Cat steps in different piles of different messes, staining his shoes with a new colour every time. In this learning and evaluation situation, students will learn about colours through storytelling, songs and activities. Using a word bank, students will have to think about other possible messes Pete the Cat could step in and what colour it would stain his beautiful white shoes. Your students will enjoy humming and singing along with Pete the Cat. For those of you who enjoy making art projects once in a while, a Pete the Cat mask creation activity is also included. Enjoy!
MY THINK-A-MA-JINK
Elementary cCcle 1
Storytelling
Storytelling is an engaging and effective way to welcome young students into a magnificent world of ESL. This activity is based on a book entitled My Think-a-ma-Jink. Watch Jeff Stinco read the story about Jack, a young boy who receives the most unique present for his birthday: an imagination machine. Your students will be taken on a journey through Jack’s wild imagination to discover universes like Lollipop-Palooza and Mount Everfudge. This lesson includes flashcards and vocabulary building activities. Your students will play with words in different ways before creating their own personal Think-a-ma-Jink universe. Enjoy!

NURSERY RHYMES
Elementary Cycle 1
Get Them Singing and Clapping
Learning through songs is a great way to explore a language and acquire vocabulary. Using nursery rhymes in the ESL classroom is a fun way to get started as they are great for pronunciation and contain a lot of repetition. In this activity, students will listen to famous nursery rhymes, watch a video online and complete a different task after each song. They will absolutely love the clapping rhymes.
CAMP SONGS
Grade 2 and 3
Help! I Teach Intercycle!
Teaching ESL to a class with multiple levels can be a challenge sometimes. Anyone who has had to teach to an elementary 2-3 class knows that mixing cycles in a class, especially with the younger learners, is THE ultimate challenge. Therefore, here are a couple of differentiated tasks that will support teachers working in such a context. With this material, teachers will not have to double his planning workload! And kids will enjoy all the signing and clapping!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Grade 2 and 3
An Intercyle LES
This LES has been created to go along with the book Happy Birthday Winnie by Valerie Thomas. You can buy the book here. After reading the book to the students, the teacher will help them build vocabulary using the interactive whiteboard tools provided. For each activity, handouts are available for both grade 2 and grade 3 students. Each grade level will be evaluated according to their own programme's competencies.
